Peas Pulao - Matar Pulav - Matar Pulao Recipe

Hello foodies,

With the abundance of peas during the winter season, most of my recipes revolve around this sweet vegetable. Very popoluarwith kids and adults alike, peas pulao is a complete meal in itself when combined with spicy green chutney, some papad and some homemade curd. So, let's prepare this easy-peasy lunch/dinner meal in 15 minutes flat.

Ingredients (you will need):


Basmati rice - 1 cup
Salt, to taste
Cumin seeds, 1 tbsp
Fresh Green Peas (shelled), 1 cup
Garam Masala Powder, 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder, 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder, 1/2 tsp
Ghee/Clarified butter, 1 tablespoon
Green Cardamon, 2
Cinnamon stick, 1/2 inch
Cloves, 2
Water, 2.5 cups

Cooking steps:

1. Wash and soak the rice of your choice for atleast an hour before cooking. I have used basmati rice but you can choose any rice as per your preference. Soak the rice in the amount of water required by your brand of rice to cook completely. I have used 2.5 cups of water for 1 cup of rice.

2. In a pan/kadai, heat ghee. Next add in the cardamom, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Saute them for 30 seconds on low flame. Once fragrant add in the cumin seeds.

3. Add in the spice powders next, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder. Saute the spices for 10-20 seconds on low flame, taking care not to burn them.

4. Add in the shelled and washed green peas. Saute the peas for a minute or so. Add salt and garam masala at this stage.

5. Add the soaked rice along with the water and mix well.

6. Cover and cook the rice for 10-15 minutes or till done on a low flame. Keep stirring the rice lightly after every 5 minutes. If you feel the rice has not cooked and the water is less you may add 1-2 tbsp of hot water.

7. The fragrant pea pulao is ready.

8. Serve the hot and steaming pulao to your loved ones with dollops of curd, papad and chutney.
