Today I am sharing one of the simplest recipe in the world, the good old dal chawal, where they are cooked together. Yes you heard it right! Soak the dal and chawal together and cook it together just like you would cook any pulao/pulav and you are set! Takes minimal prep time and minimal cooking efforts, yet provides a sumptous meal when you are in a lazy mood. Perfect for lunches, you can spice up the dish by adding accompaniments like chutney/pickle/raita/fry-ems etc. So let's get started with the recipe...
Basmati rice - 1 cup
Arhar/Toor Dal - 1 cup
Salt, to taste
Cumin seeds, 1 tbsp
Garam Masala Powder, 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder, 1/2 tsp
Ghee/Clarified butter, 1 tablespoon
Water, 3.5 cups
1. Wash and soak the rice and dal together for atleast an hour before cooking. I have used basmati rice but you can choose any rice as per your preference. I have used 3.5 cups of water for 1 cup of rice and 1 cup dal.
2. In a kadai/wok heat 1 tbsp of oil/ghee. Add cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and garam masala powder. Let the spices saute for 30 seconds or so. Take care not to burn the spices.
3. Add the soaked dal and rice along with the water used for soaking into the kadai. Stir well. Cover and cook till the rice and dal are done and the water is completely absorbed. Turn off the flame and keep covered for 5 minutes.
4. Serve hot with choice of accompaniments like curd, chutney, pickle, papad etc.
